An exceptionally important and highly attractive Vacheron & Constantin chronograph, this Ref. 4072 belongs to the earliest known production of one of the maison’s most celebrated vintage references. Produced from 1938 through the 1970s in several configurations, the reference appeared in yellow gold, pink gold, and steel, yet this particular example stands apart for both its rarity and historical significance.
Dating to late 1938, it is part of the very first production batch of the Ref. 4072, fitted with the Caliber 295, based on the Valjoux 22, a movement believed to have been used in only the first 27 pieces produced. Adding further distinction, the dial departs from the more familiar layouts seen on the reference. Rather than applied indexes or a conventional signature arrangement, it features a captivating three tone sector design with beautifully raised enamel details, giving the watch a unique and highly refined character.
The caseback bears Geneva Key number 4, identifying Antoine Gerlach as the casemaker, a detail that further enhances its appeal to knowledgeable collectors.
