The Quartz Revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s challenged Swiss watchmakers with the rise of low-cost Japanese quartz watches. In response, brands like Patek Philippe, Omega, and Rolex formed the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH) to develop their own high-precision quartz movements.
The CEH’s crowning achievement was the Beta-21 movement in 1969, offering exceptional accuracy. Patek Philippe’s first quartz watch, the reference 3587, showcased this technology with a bold design: a large, cushion-shaped case and a luxurious aesthetic that reflected the spirit of the 1970s.
